R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Joyce Maxine Whigham Dorrycott of San Antonio celebrated a special milestone in her life with her 75th birthday on April 13, 2005; and WHEREAS, An active voice in educating the public about domestic violence as well as a prominent political advisor, Ms. Dorrycott received her bachelor's and master's degrees with honors in history and political science from Southwest Texas State University and was a professor in the political science department at the university for 14 years; and WHEREAS, She established the family violence unit of the Bexar County District Attorney's Office and chaired a San Antonio task force on domestic violence; she also organized statewide support for the passage of 23 domestic violence and child abuse laws; and WHEREAS, Ms. Dorrycott has been honored for her vital work with countless organizations and committees, including the statewide Council on Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention, the Children's Trust Fund of San Antonio, the Bexar County Coalition on Domestic Violence, of which she is a cofounder, and the Commission on Juvenile Justice; this esteemed woman is the author of numerous articles and books, has been recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bexar County Democratic Party, and was inducted into the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame in 1984; and WHEREAS, The mother of three sons and two daughters, Ms. Dorrycott also maintains close ties with her extended family; she led in the establishment of the Whigham Family Association and has compiled two books on their shared heritage; and WHEREAS, With steadfast determination, Joyce Dorrycott has had an immeasurable impact on the lives of many Texans, and her dedication to her state is truly worthy of special recognition on this memorable occasion; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Joyce Whigham Dorrycott on her 75th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Dorrycott as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
