H.R. No. 1742
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Monica Weisberg-Stewart is a truly noteworthy
business and civic leader in McAllen, and she is most deserving of
special recognition for her contributions and achievements; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in McAllen, Ms. Weisberg-Stewart
earned a bachelor's degree in communications from The University of
Texas at Austin and worked in Wal-Mart's executive management
training program in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for several years;
she returned to the Valley to help expand her family's business and
to open a 20,000-square-foot store called Gilbert's; and
WHEREAS, After seeing a decline in McAllen's downtown, she
joined with other business leaders to form the Downtown Coalition,
which evolved into the Downtown Improvement District; at the time
of the group's inception, it was addressing the needs of an area
that was half-abandoned, but through careful organization and
fund-raising efforts, the coalition was able to leverage millions
of dollars and achieved an occupancy rate of about 90 percent; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Weisberg-Stewart served on the board of the
First McAllen Development Corporation during a number of major
construction projects; she is on the Heart of the City board and the
board of Future McAllen and is in her second year as chair of the
McAllen Chamber of Commerce; she is also involved in the U.S. Visit
Program that is working to allow Mexicans the same visiting rights
as Canadians; and
WHEREAS, A devoted wife, mother, daughter, and civic leader,
Ms. Weisberg-Stewart continues to work to ensure the vitality of
her community; truly an inspiration, she is much admired by her
friends and neighbors, who undoubtedly appreciate her commitment to
the city of McAllen; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Monica Weisberg-Stewart for her
outstanding civic contributions and extend to her sincere best
wishes for continued success and accomplishment; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Weisberg-Stewart as an expression of high regard
by the Texas House of Representatives.
