R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Lindale are celebrating the centennial
of the city's official founding, and this special occasion provides
an opportune time to reflect on the history of this vibrant East
Texas town; and
WHEREAS, Located in northwestern Smith County, the area was
first organized in 1871 by Richard B. Hubbard, who would later go on
to serve Texas as governor; by 1873, a post office and mercantile
store had been established in the community, and two years later,
the International & Great Northern Railroad Company built lines
through the town, which flourished with this increased activity;
and
WHEREAS, On January 4, 1905, Lindale was officially
incorporated with more than 500 residents; under the leadership of
the town's first mayor, John S. Ogburn, Lindale became a center for
canning fruits and vegetables, and it became particularly
well-known for its excellent berries; and
WHEREAS, The Lindale school district has been a significant
source of pride for the community for many years, and today it
stands as a successful testament to the city's commitment to its
youth; in the past few years, Lindale High School has won numerous
awards in academic, athletic, and artistic interscholastic
competitions; this highly respected district employs quality
teachers and currently educates more than 3,200 students; and
WHEREAS, With its thriving sense of community, attractive
opportunities, and outstanding schools, Lindale continues to be a
treasured asset of the Lone Star State, and it is a pleasure to pay
tribute to this unique town and its forward-looking citizenry; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the residents of Lindale on the
occasion of the city's centennial celebration and extend to them
sincere best wishes for a memorable observance.
