H.R. No. 1812
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, May 22, 2005, is a red-letter day at Pleasant Grove
Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, for members and friends are
celebrating two joyous events--the church's reunion/homecoming and
its 133rd anniversary; and
WHEREAS, This dynamic Fifth Ward institution dates back to
1872, when the seed of today's flourishing congregation was a
modest core of the faithful, led by Reverend Stewart of Mount Zion
Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, Worship was initially held in a founder's home; it
was moved to a brush arbor, and then to a tabernacle that members
had funded and constructed; though fire destroyed more than one of
Pleasant Grove's buildings and the church moved several times, the
congregation's faith held steady and they built and renovated to
meet expanding needs during many exciting periods of growth; and
WHEREAS, Today, the church home features a spacious
5,000-seat domed sanctuary and includes a family life center, Bible
bookstore, day-care center, gymnasium, and the A. A. McCardell
Academy, named for one of Pleasant Grove's dynamic pastors; and
WHEREAS, Under the inspirational leadership of the Reverend
C. L. Jackson for the past 3-1/2 decades and his son, the Reverend
S. L. Jackson for the past five years, Pleasant Grove Missionary
Baptist Church sponsors an array of programs and events, such as the
drill squad and the annual prayer bowl, and television, bus,
street, prison, jail, and radio ministries; and
WHEREAS, For 133 years, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist
Church has sought to serve its members and neighbors in the wider
community, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the church on
this special occasion in its rich history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist
Church on its reunion/homecoming and 133rd anniversary and extend
to all those associated with the celebration sincere best wishes
for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
