H.R. No. 1849


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Odessa High School senior Mariah Willis has demonstrated excellence in academics and athletics, while also setting a positive example as a community leader and volunteer, and this exemplary young lady is most deserving of special legislative recognition; and WHEREAS, Ms. Willis maintains a 3.8 GPA at Odessa High School and has established an impressive 3.0 GPA while taking advanced courses at Odessa College; she is active with several extracurricular organizations, including the student council junior and senior boards, and has earned mention in the annual Who's Who Among American High School Students; and WHEREAS, A standout athlete in both basketball and track, Ms. Willis was named All Permian Basin Most Valuable Player and District 3-5A Most Valuable Player as she led the Lady Bronchos basketball team to the 2004-2005 district championship; she threw the discus and shot put as a member of the 2002-2003 district championship track team, and is a three-year varsity letter winner for track and field; and WHEREAS, Ms. Willis's community service includes participation with Keep Odessa Beautiful, the Medical Center Hospital Junior Auxiliary, and the St. James Baptist Church food pantry; she is also active with the Black Cultural Council of Odessa; and WHEREAS, This outstanding young Texan is the recipient of the Lions Club's Outstanding Youth Scholarship and has earned a scholarship to West Texas A&M University, where she will undoubtedly continue to set and achieve challenging goals, and the members of this chamber are pleased to wish her well as she begins the next chapter of her life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commend Mariah Willis for her notable academic and athletic career at Odessa High School, congratulate her on the receipt of a scholarship to West Texas A&M University, and recognize her for her contributions to her community; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Willis as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
