R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Lieutenant General Norton A. Schwartz, director of
the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, has rendered outstanding service
to this country throughout his illustrious career, and he is now
playing a vital role in the war on terrorism; and
WHEREAS, Reporting directly to the chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, General Schwartz coordinates the unified strategic
direction of the nation's combat forces, their operation under
unified command, and their integration into an efficient team of
land, naval, and air forces; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished officer served as an air force
crew member in the 1975 airlift evacuation of Saigon, and in 1991 he
served as chief of staff of the Joint Special Operations Task Force
for Northern Iraq in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; six
years later he led the Joint Task Force that prepared for the
evacuation of U.S. citizens in Cambodia; and
WHEREAS, Before assuming his present duties in October 2004,
General Schwartz served as director of operations for the Joint
Staff; he earlier served as commander, Alaskan Command, Alaskan
North American Aerospace Defense Command Region and 11th Air Force,
and as deputy commander of U.S. Special Operations Command; and
WHEREAS, A 1973 graduate of the United States Air Force
Academy, General Schwartz earned an M.B.A. from Central Michigan
University and has attended the Armed Forces Staff College and
National War College; in addition, he was a 1994 Fellow of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI and is a member
of the Council on Foreign Relations; and
WHEREAS, Awards bestowed on General Schwartz include the
Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service
Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf
clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air
Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Army
Commendation Medal; and
WHEREAS, General Schwartz has been invited by the Jewish
Institute for National Security Affairs to present that
organization's Grateful Nation Awards at the annual JINSA dinner in
Houston on May 26, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to this country and to its military
personnel, who defend the liberties of the American people with
selfless valor, General Schwartz embodies the highest ideals of the
United States armed forces, and the State of Texas is indeed proud
to have him present among us on this special occasion; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby welcome Lieutenant General Norton A. Schwartz to
the Lone Star State and extend to him profound appreciation for his
exceptional service in this country's behalf; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for General Schwartz as an expression of high esteem by the
Texas House of Representatives.
