H.R. No. 1880


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Over the course of seven days, Mikail Davenport traveled 350 miles via handcycle from South Padre Island to Austin, completing the Capitol Ride '05 and demonstrating the capabilities of cancer survivors and people with disabilities; and WHEREAS, The Capitol Ride '05 is a project of the Austin-based Coalition of Texans with Disabilities, and Mr. Davenport's participation has helped raise awareness about the challenges faced by the disabled; a native Texan, the 56-year-old Austinite contracted polio at the age of two and has spent much of his life demonstrating the extent of his abilities; and WHEREAS, In 2000, Mr. Davenport began competing in 5K, 10K, and marathon events using his wheelchair; just two years later, he lost a third of his left lung shortly after learning that he had developed lung cancer; since that time, he has successfully completed several notable endurance events, a tribute to his strength of character, physical stamina, and commitment to triumphing over adversity; and WHEREAS, Mr. Davenport arrived in the Capitol City flanked by a group of disabled children using racing wheelchairs and also joined by Austin mayor Will Wynn; the enthusiastic assemblage traveled up Congress Avenue to the south steps of the Capitol, where the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities held a statewide disability rally to celebrate the conclusion of Mr. Davenport's seven-day adventure; and WHEREAS, A truly remarkable individual, Mikail Davenport has inspired countless people, disabled or not, through his participation in an array of physically challenging contests, and his completion of the Capitol Ride '05 has undoubtedly raised awareness of the capabilities of cancer survivors and people with disabilities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize Mikail Davenport and Capitol Ride '05 and commend all those who supported Mr. Davenport in the realization and completion of this unique and inspiring event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Davenport and the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
