R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A loving family and a host of dear friends celebrate
the life of Cheryl Courrege Burguieres of Houston, who passed away
on May 9, 2005, at the age of 60; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 23, 1944, in New Iberia, Louisiana,
Mrs. Burguieres graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in New Iberia
and from the University of Louisiana; she married Philip
Burguieres, her sweetheart from high school and college, on August
21, 1965, and the couple lived for a time in Virginia Beach,
Virginia, where Mrs. Burguieres taught high school history and
government; and
WHEREAS, After moving with her family to Houston in 1975,
Mrs. Burguieres became involved in her children's schools, serving
on the Duchesne Academy Parents' Council Board of Directors and
assisting with fund-raising for St. Thomas High School; and
WHEREAS, She was an author, and her autobiographical work,
One Centimeter, about a young woman's interactions with her doctor
following her diagnosis with breast cancer, raised more than
$100,000, all of which has been donated to the M.D. Anderson Cancer
Center; as well as holding membership in the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation and Rosebuds II, a support group for women at risk
for recurrent metastatic breast cancer, Mrs. Burguieres spoke
publicly about the struggle that she and other women were waging
against the disease; and
WHEREAS, A sustaining member of the Houston Junior Forum, she
served on the board of directors and advisory council for the Homes
of St. Mark, supported the Baylor Research Advocates for Student
Scientists, and volunteered her time with the United Way of the Gulf
Coast, Museum of Fine Arts, Heritage Society, and Houston Symphony;
and
WHEREAS, In 1999, the Cancer League honored Cheryl and Philip
Burguieres as a Pacesetter Couple of the Year, and in 2004 Mrs.
Burguieres was honored by the Krist Samaritan Center for her work in
behalf of mental health; more recently, the Smithsonian Institution
conferred on her its Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service; and
WHEREAS, In her private life, Mrs. Burguieres enjoyed giving
rein to her creative talents as a cook, interior designer, and
hostess, and she nurtured her family and friends with warmth and
wisdom; and
WHEREAS, Sustained by her deep faith, Cheryl Burguieres
brought to her many endeavors a dedication and generosity of spirit
that inspired countless hearts, and she will be sorely missed by all
who had the great privilege of sharing in her love and affection;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Cheryl
Courrege Burguieres and extend sincere sympathy to the members of
her family: to her husband of nearly 40 years, Philip J.
Burguieres; to her children and daughter-in-law, Emily L.
Burguieres and P. Martial Burguieres and his wife, Valeria
Miro-Quesada; to her mother, Irene LeBlanc Courrege; to her
brothers and sisters and their spouses, John Edward Courrege and
his wife, Dana, Susan and her husband, Gary Phillips, and Catherine
and her husband, Victor Huckaby; to her sister-in-law, Denise, and
her husband, Robert Hein; and to the many other relatives and
friends of this beloved woman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cheryl
Courrege Burguieres.
