R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A loving family and dear friends mourn the passing
of Seth Dockery, Jr., who died on March 15, 2005, at the age of 83;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Dockery earned his undergraduate degree from
Huston-Tillotson University, where he was a member of the Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity, and went on to receive a master's degree in
education from Texas Southern University; and
WHEREAS, This highly regarded educator taught school and
coached basketball and track at Waelder High School from 1951 to
1966, when he moved to Cameron; he coached and taught social
studies, history, government, and geography until his 1985
retirement; and
WHEREAS, He worked for the betterment of his community
through various endeavors and organizations, including the
Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, where he chaired the deacon
board and was Sunday school superintendent; he served as president
of the Brotherhood in the Lincoln District of the Missionary
Baptist Association, as president of the Cameron Chapter of the
O. J. Thomas Alumni Association, and as a member of the board of the
Cameron ISD Education Foundation; and
WHEREAS, He also had served as president of the Yoe High
Booster Club and the Cameron Evening Lions Club and had been a
member of the boards of the Cameron Area Chamber of Commerce and the
Central Texas Council of Governments; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his contributions, he received
awards from the Milam County 4-H, Cameron Area Chamber of Commerce,
and Cameron Evening Lions Club, among others, and he was a Golden
Heritage Member of the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, A man who loved sports, gardening, and everything
about his farm and ranch, Seth Dockery lived a life full of joyful
times and meaningful accomplishments, and his memory will be
forever cherished by those who were blessed to share in the warmth
of his love and friendship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Seth Dockery, Jr., and
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
Zelma Smizer Dockery; to his children, Grace and Crystal Dockery
and Seth Dockery III; to his brother-in-law, David Smizer, and
sisters-in-law, Margie Garcia and Earsilene Hudspeth; and to his
other relatives and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Seth
Dockery, Jr.
