R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Honorable Samuel L. Neal, Jr., has ably served
the citizens of Corpus Christi as mayor since his election in April
1997, and this esteemed public servant will complete his fourth and
final term in April 2005; and
WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mayor Neal was born in Henderson and
is a graduate of Paris High School; he continued his education at
Texas A&M University in College Station, where he was a proud member
of the Corps of Cadets and earned a bachelor's degree in marketing
in 1959; today, he also holds a master's in business administration
from the former Texas A&I University in Kingsville; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from college, he was commissioned a
second lieutenant in the army; in 1989, he retired from the Army
Reserve as a colonel after more than 30 years in the military;
highly regarded for his business and leadership skills, Mayor Neal
has enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry and
currently serves as chairman of Hilb, Rogal and Hobbs Insurance
Company; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Neal has worked diligently in behalf of his
fellow citizens in Corpus Christi; his efforts have led to the
creation of a "Crime Control and Prevention District" and the
development of a multipurpose arena; he has also supported the
construction and maintenance of Packery Channel and the Bayfront
Master Plan, as well as continued improvements to the city's
infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Neal has represented the citizens of Corpus
Christi as a member of the Texas Municipal League since 1998,
serving as president of that organization during the 77th
Legislature; he has received numerous prestigious gubernatorial
appointments both before and during his tenure as mayor, and he
continues to serve as the chairman of the South Texas Military
Facilities Task Force; and
WHEREAS, Corpus Christi and its citizens have greatly
benefited from the visionary leadership and guidance of Mayor Loyd
Neal, and his myriad contributions to the City by the Sea will
continue to benefit the area for years to come; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Mayor Samuel L. Neal, Jr., for his
commendable service as mayor of the City of Corpus Christi and
extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness in all
his endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mayor Neal as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
