R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For 50 years, The Dallas Weekly has provided a forum
for the African American community of North Texas; and
WHEREAS, Critically acclaimed and widely read, the newspaper
combines a commitment to excellence in journalism and thorough
coverage of issues pertaining and of interest to African Americans;
and
WHEREAS, In 1955, The Dallas Weekly was founded as a leaflet
titled Circle News by disc jockey and entrepreneur Tony Davis;
initially it was a vehicle to advertise African American businesses
in the city, but as it grew, the newspaper became an essential voice
for and by the African American community; and
WHEREAS, Now run by publisher Jim Washington and serving
Dallas, Fort Worth, Duncanville, Arlington, Irving, DeSoto, Grand
Prairie, Richardson, Plano, Garland, Cedar Hill, Mesquite, and
surrounding areas, The Dallas Weekly provides its readers with
passionate, well-rounded coverage of essential information, and it
has ably assumed an integral place among the news organizations of
the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor The Dallas Weekly on the 50th anniversary
of its founding and extend to all those associated with this
venerable paper sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the newspaper as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
