R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the life of Travis A. Peeler, a lawyer, lawmaker, and civic activist, who died March 19, 2005, at the age of 80; and WHEREAS, Born in Christine on January 17, 1925, Mr. Peeler served with the United States Army Air Corps in France during World War II and flew more than 25 missions over Germany; and WHEREAS, After the war, he attended Texas A&I University and The University of Texas School of Law, from which he graduated second in his class in 1953; early in his career, Mr. Peeler worked as a briefing attorney for the Texas Supreme Court and as a Corpus Christi assistant city attorney; he later practiced law as a partner in the firm of Prichard, Peeler, Cartwright, and Hall until his retirement in 1998; and WHEREAS, Mr. Peeler was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1960 and served four consecutive terms; during his tenure in the legislature he introduced successful legislation to abolish the poll tax and secured passage of a measure providing for automatic voter registration renewal for those who vote consistently; in a lighthearted vein, he added to a bill that was assured of passage an amendment regarding punishment for Peeping Toms, reducing the sentence from five years to two and a half years if the perpetrator had only one eye; and WHEREAS, A lifelong student of politics, this distinguished Texan taught political science at Del Mar College in the 1970s and also served for two years as chairman of the Nueces County Democratic Party; and WHEREAS, Travis Peeler was married to Jane Noe and later, for 25 years, to Louise E. Peeler, who preceded him in death; he was the proud father of two children and two stepchildren; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, Travis Peeler gave unselfishly of himself to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who had the great fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of the Honorable Travis A. Peeler and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Bonnie Peeler; to his daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Larry Dick; to his stepchildren, Blake and Jo Betsy Vaught; to his grandchildren, Lara, Christopher L., and Travis Lee Peeler, Jane Elizabeth and Michael David Dick, and Austin Thomas and Jacob Barrett Vaught; to his former wife, Jane Noe; and to the other relatives and friends of this beloved gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of the Honorable Travis A. Peeler.
