R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Teresa Estrada of McAllen received her associate's
degree in criminal justice from South Texas College on May 14, 2005;
and
WHEREAS, A 52-year-old grandmother and the mother of four
sons, Mrs. Estrada demonstrated remarkable dedication as she
pursued her degree, overcoming health problems and balancing the
various responsibilities that come with being a wife, mother, and
grandmother; and
WHEREAS, In addition to receiving her diploma, she was
honored at the school's commencement ceremony by school president
Shirley Reed with the Presidential Inspirational Achievement
Award; this prestigious annual award recognizes a student who
serves as a role model for students, faculty, and staff; and
WHEREAS, Another highlight of that memorable day was seeing
her 19-year-old son, David, receive his associate's degree, also in
criminal justice; the mother and son took three classes together
while pursuing their degrees and were often seen dining together at
the school cafeteria; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Estrada earned a GED after dropping out of high
school, but family obligations prevented her from attending college
until the fall of 2001, when she enrolled at South Texas College;
married to husband David for 28 years, she remains a dedicated wife
and homemaker, and she plans to continue her education by pursuing a
bachelor's degree in criminal justice from The University of
Texas--Pan American; and
WHEREAS, Teresa Estrada truly sets an outstanding example for
her fellow students, for her professors, and for all Texans, and her
receipt of an associate's degree in criminal justice is a special
achievement that is most worthy of legislative recognition; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Teresa Estrada for receiving her
associate's degree from South Texas College and extend best wishes
to her for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Estrada as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
