R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Colleen C. Barrett of Dallas, president and corporate secretary for Southwest Airlines, has received a 2005 Horatio Alger Award and was inducted as a lifetime member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc.; and WHEREAS, The award recognizes individuals who have overcome humble beginnings and adversity to achieve great success; members of the association serve as mentors and sponsor need-based scholarships awarded annually to high school seniors; and WHEREAS, A graduate of Becker Junior College in Worcester, Massachusetts, Ms. Barrett joined Southwest in 1978 as corporate secretary and has served as vice president--administration, executive vice president--customers, and chief operating officer; before joining the much-respected airline, she worked for several years as an executive assistant for Herb Kelleher, the current chair of Southwest; and WHEREAS, Ms. Barrett is also on the board of directors of JCPenney Company, Inc., and the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan Dallas, Inc., and she is a member of the Dallas Forum and the International Women's Forum; and WHEREAS, No stranger to honors, this esteemed professional has been recognized with countless awards and distinctions and has been named one of the world's 100 most powerful women by Forbes.com and one of the top 50 leaders by Fast Company magazine; and WHEREAS, Colleen Barrett is an exceptional civic leader and businesswoman who truly embodies the spirit of this prestigious award by demonstrating that hard work, perseverance, and integrity are the cornerstones of success; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Colleen C. Barrett on her receipt of the Horatio Alger Award and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Barrett as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
