R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, James W. Keyes, president and chief executive officer of 7-Eleven, Inc., has received a 2005 Horatio Alger Award and was inducted as a lifetime member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc.; and WHEREAS, The award recognizes individuals who have overcome humble beginnings and adversity to achieve great success; members of the association serve as mentors and sponsor need-based scholarships awarded annually to high school seniors; and WHEREAS, Born in Grafton, Massachusetts, Mr. Keyes earned his bachelor's degree from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and his master's degree in business from Columbia University in New York; before joining 7-Eleven's former subsidiary, CITGO Petroleum, in 1985, he held various positions with Gulf Oil Corporation; and WHEREAS, This esteemed professional has served as the corporation's chief financial officer, executive vice president, and chief operating officer; a member of the board of directors since 1997, he was elected president and CEO in April 2000, and he currently oversees more than 26,000 7-Eleven stores in the United States, Canada, and 17 other countries and U.S. territories; and WHEREAS, James Keyes is an exceptional businessman who truly embodies the spirit of this prestigious award by demonstrating that hard work, perseverance, and integrity are the cornerstones of success; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate James W. Keyes on his receipt of the Horatio Alger Award and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Keyes as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
