R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Through her far-reaching civic leadership, Shirley Reed has rendered immeasurable service to the Aldine community; and WHEREAS, Born and raised in New York City, Ms. Reed lived with her husband in Houma, Louisiana, before the couple moved to Houston in 1970; Ms. Reed joined the Mendel Elementary School PTA soon after settling in the Aldine area, and she remains an active PTA member; and WHEREAS, Alert to the needs of her neighbors and fellow citizens, Shirley Reed has stepped forward time and again to address important local issues; this public-spirited woman played a vital role in securing a sheriff's storefront station in her neighborhood in 1995, and she has served as president of the Greenforest Civic Club since 1996; in addition, she has taken part in the organization Aldine Communities Together; and WHEREAS, Yet another of her undertakings has been the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group of Aldine--Harris County, Inc., which she founded several years ago; on July 22, 2005, the group is holding its second annual Family Strengthening Conference, a gathering to help promote esteem among children and to assist grandparents in identifying and accessing useful community services; and WHEREAS, Shirley Reed has long exemplified the constructive civic engagement that builds strong, vibrant, and caring communities, and many Texans have benefited from her efforts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor Shirley Reed for her exceptional contributions to the citizens of Aldine and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all her endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Reed as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
