R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Reverend Robert L. Thomas, Jr., of Houston is celebrating his first anniversary as pastor of Olivet Missionary Baptist Church on May 29, 2005; and WHEREAS, A native Texan, Reverend Thomas attended schools in Houston and Hempstead and earned both his bachelor's degree in industrial technology and his master's degree in educational administration from Prairie View A&M University; and WHEREAS, He joined Olivet Missionary Baptist in the mid-1990s as a deacon and member of the board of trustees; in 1998, he answered the call to the ministry and began a five-year tenure as the congregation's youth minister; for several months in 2003, he served as the church's interim pastor and was soon unanimously elected as the congregation's permanent pastor; and WHEREAS, In addition to his religious service, Reverend Thomas has enjoyed a career as a teacher in the technology education departments at a number of middle schools and high schools throughout the Lone Star State; currently the program director of business/education partnerships for the Aldine Independent School District, he has also served as an adjunct faculty instructor in the North Harris Montgomery Community College District; and WHEREAS, While demands on his time are many, Reverend Thomas has further distinguished himself through his involvement in a host of professional and civic organizations, including the North Houston Greenspoint Chamber of Commerce Workforce Development Committee, Northwest Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, North Harris College Applied Technology Advisory Council, and Association of Builders and Contractors Education Committee; a participant in the Taking Education to Work Initiative, he has also served as president of the Gulf Coast Career and Technology Administrators of Texas and is currently president-elect of Leadership North Houston Alumni; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Reverend Thomas has enjoyed the love and support of his wife of 18 years, Tracey Brooks Thomas, and their two children, Mariel and Taylor Thomas; and WHEREAS, This esteemed clergyman's untiring efforts and inspired teachings have been a great blessing to Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor him at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Reverend Robert L. Thomas, Jr., on his first anniversary as pastor of Olivet Missionary Baptist Church and extend to him sincere best wishes for many more years of service to the congregation; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Reverend Thomas as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
