R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 2000 Census found that the Hispanic population in the Dallas-Fort Worth area increased by more than 110 percent between 1990 and 2000, and the Texas State Data Center is projecting that it will grow by another 300 percent by 2040; and WHEREAS, One of the top 100 colleges for Hispanic students, the University of North Texas in Denton has more than 60 outstanding research and service centers that provide specialized training and programs for students, faculty, and the public, but it does not have a special center for Mexican-American studies; and WHEREAS, Such a center would provide classes, programs, and special events that help prepare students to live and work in a state with a growing Latino population, assist in the recruitment of Hispanic students, and encourage high school and junior high students to stay in school; and WHEREAS, The State of Texas would benefit immeasurably from the establishment of a center at the University of North Texas dedicated to studies about this important segment of our population; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby express its intent that the University of North Texas establish a Center for Mexican-American Studies; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the Texas House of Representatives state explicitly its legislative intent that the university use any available funds, including legislative appropriations made to the university for instruction, operations, or infrastructure support, federal funds, or gifts or grants, up to $200,000, to establish or operate the center, and that all funds collected by the center be dedicated to the establishment and operation of the center.
