R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 2004-2005 science team from Academy High School in Kingsville has claimed the Class 1A state championship, winning that prestigious title during the UIL State Academic Meet held in Austin on May 7, 2005; and WHEREAS, In the science contest, teams have two hours to answer 60 questions--20 each in biology, chemistry, and physics; previous Academy science teams have had individual winners, but this is the first time in the school's 11-year history that the group has won as a team; the Academy squad bested the second-place team at state by 10 points; and WHEREAS, Securing this year's championship were Academy students Maria Cabezas, a senior and the daughter of Jose Cabezas; Judith Holloway, a junior and the daughter of Robert and Josephine Holloway; Vanessa Johnson, a junior and the daughter of Daniel and Yone Johnson; and Justin Munoz, a junior and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hector Munoz; the team was ably coached by science teacher Lon Neth; and WHEREAS, At the district meet, Ms. Cabezas placed second in overall science and scored highest in chemistry, while Ms. Johnson placed third in overall science and Ms. Holloway made the top biology mark; the team won the wild card to move on as a group to regional competition, where Ms. Johnson placed first in overall science and scored highest in chemistry, and Ms. Holloway scored highest in physics; as a team, the students won first place and advanced to the state contest, where Mr. Munoz notched the top chemistry score and tied for fourth place in overall science; and WHEREAS, Through exhaustive preparation and tremendous dedication, the members of the Academy High School science team have brought great credit to themselves, their school, and their community, and they have compiled a record of accomplishment that promises a bright and fulfilling future; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the members and coach of the 2004-2005 Academy High School science team on winning the Class 1A state championship at the UIL State Academic Meet and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success in all their endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Academy High School science team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
