R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A full and generous life came to an end with the passing of Johnnie Upsher Goodman of Arlington on May 28, 2005, at the age of 82; and WHEREAS, The father of our esteemed colleague, State Representative Toby Goodman, this distinguished lifelong Texan was born on February 12, 1923, in Goodlett to William Thomas Goodman and Nettie Virginia Russell; and WHEREAS, When the United States entered World War II, Mr. Goodman left high school to come to the aid of his country, and he served the U.S. Navy with honor in the European and Pacific theaters; in 1993, he was recognized by the governor as an admiral of the Texas Navy, and in 2001, he proudly accepted his belated but well-deserved high school diploma; and WHEREAS, Mr. Goodman married Opal Ester Lene Johnson, better known as Dobbie Jean, on June 1, 1947, in Wichita Falls; together, they shared in the joy of raising five children and doting on 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, This devoted family man took great pleasure in spending time with his loved ones, and he was an active member of the community of faith at Heritage Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, A Texan of integrity and dedication, Johnnie Goodman will long be missed, but he leaves behind a legacy to treasure for all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Johnnie Upsher Goodman and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 58 years, Opal Ester Lene Goodman; to his children, State Representative Toby Ray Goodman, Gary Van Goodman, Kirby Joe Goodman, Michael John Goodman, and Deidre Darlene Goodman; to his 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Johnnie Upsher Goodman.
