R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The relationship between a modern commercial enterprise and the city in which it does business carries with it both great responsibility and great potential for positive effect; and WHEREAS, The mutually beneficial association between the H-E-B chain of grocery stores and Del Rio is a sterling example of what can be achieved by an involved corporate citizen and a responsive community; and WHEREAS, The C. C. Butt Grocery Store opened for business in Kerrville on November 26, 1905; established by Florence Butt, the market was funded by a $60 investment and a desire to provide staples and extraordinary products to the area residents; and WHEREAS, Today, H-E-B operates nearly 300 grocery stores throughout Texas and Mexico, staffed by more than 56,000 employees; and WHEREAS, Throughout its proud century-long history, H-E-B has been known for its commitment to the greater good, and the company contributes to such worthy causes as hunger relief and prevention, education, health and wellness, the environment, and the arts; it has donated five percent of its pre-tax earnings to charitable endeavors since the 1930s, and remains one of the few companies in the nation to give at such a level; and WHEREAS, Each year, H-E-B provides more than $30 million in products and transportation to support Texas food banks and helps to feed more than 210,000 people during the annual holiday Feast of Sharing dinners, which are held in 23 communities across Texas and Mexico; and WHEREAS, The company also recognizes outstanding public school teachers, principals, and their schools through the Excellence in Education Awards, providing more than $400,000 in grants and prizes; and WHEREAS, Since its founding, H-E-B has been a generous donor to the communities it serves, and its host of worthy programs have contributed significantly to the well-being of many Del Rio residents; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor H-E-B in Del Rio for its outstanding corporate citizenship and extend to all its employees and management sincere wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Del Rio H-E-B as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
