R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Doris Williams of Lake Jackson personifies the highest qualities of community service and civic leadership, and her 70th birthday on August 28, 2005, provides a fitting opportunity to recognize her for her achievements; and WHEREAS, Born on August 28, 1935, in Alto, Doris Faye Allen was the youngest child of Raymond and Agnes Allen; after her brother, Charles, and her sisters, Virginia, Katherine, and Margie, graduated and left the family home, her parents moved to Brazoria County, where Doris graduated from Brazosport High School in 1953; and WHEREAS, This native Texan married W. Kenneth Williams, and the couple enjoyed an enduring union that spanned 29 years until his passing in 2001; today, she continues to enjoy the love and affection of a fine family that includes two daughters, Jean Ann and Theresa Kay and her husband, Donald Wayne, two grandchildren, Brittany Marie and Miles Randolph, and one grandcat, Rascal Baby; and WHEREAS, She is a member of First United Methodist Church of Lake Jackson and takes great pleasure in serving on many church committees; and WHEREAS, This esteemed woman is also a dedicated community leader, as evidenced by her work in behalf of the city of Lake Jackson, where she has resided for more than 50 years; asked in 1981 to serve in a vacated position on the city council, she went on to win several unopposed elections to the council and eventually ran for mayor, taking office in 1988 and serving successfully until her retirement in 1996; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has been politically active not only in her local community but also in numerous county, state, and national capacities, including her service as an alternate delegate and an alternate-at-large to the Republican National Convention in 1988; a member of Brazosport Republican Women, she served as a county election judge and with numerous city, county, state, and national election committees; and WHEREAS, Her leadership has also benefited the Brazosport College Foundation, which she served as steering committee chair, and she kicked off the "Building a Legacy" campaign to assist in securing resources for the school's first-ever facilities expansion capital campaign; she was honored for her generous donation as well as her volunteer work with the college's finance, development, and fund development committees; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has held leadership positions with a number of social, service, business, and health-related organizations, including the Brazosport Health Foundation, the Lake Jackson Museum, Lake Jackson Emergency Medical Services, the Lake Jackson Business Association, Brazoria County Museum, the DeLay Foundation, Brazosport Memorial Hospital's Advisory Board, and the Lake Jackson Historical Museum, to name but a few; and WHEREAS, Her exceptional contributions to her community have earned this public-spirited woman repeated recognition from numerous local organizations, such as induction into the Republican Hall of Honor and receipt of the Brazosport Outstanding Woman of the Year award, the Community Builder Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas, and the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club; and WHEREAS, Through her tireless commitment to creating a stronger, more vibrant community, Doris Williams has immeasurably enriched the world around her and touched the lives of countless fellow citizens; beloved by many for her caring and generous nature, she indeed has reason to celebrate seven decades of wonderful memories with her loving family and many close friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor Doris Williams on the occasion of her 70th birthday and extend to her profound appreciation for her ongoing efforts in behalf of the citizens of Lake Jackson, Brazoria County, and the State of Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Williams as an expression of high regard from the Texas House of Representatives.
