H.R. No. 2285


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived tempers the profound sadness that the passing of Robert Stewart Shake, on July 9, 2004, brought to his friends and family; and WHEREAS, Born in Peoria, Illinois, in 1938, Mr. Shake served in the U.S. Army, attended Texas A&M University, and studied with an electrician's apprenticeship program; he eventually became active in the electrical workers' union and nurtured a burgeoning interest in politics; in the 1970s, this hardworking man was instrumental in establishing a regional licensing program for the electrical workers in the Rio Grande Valley; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shake was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party who was admired by his colleagues for his dedication to labor needs and the issues facing working families; he was the business manager at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 278 (IBEW), a position he held for 12 years, and he had also served the union as organizer, president, executive board member, joint apprenticeship and training committee member, delegate to the Texas State Association of Electrical Workers, delegate to the 35th and 36th IBEW International Convention, delegate and president of the Coastal Bend Labor Council, secretary-treasurer of the South Texas Building and Trades Council, and a member of the Supervisory Committee of the Local Union 278 Federal Credit Union; Mr. Shake was an original member of the Workforce Development Board and was appointed by the city council to serve on the Electrical Advisory Board in 1999; and WHEREAS, An avid history buff, this determined advocate loved antique trains and cars, and always surprised his friends and family with his knowledge of interesting facts and figures; he was a fun-loving man, quick with a joke to brighten the days of those around him, while always working tirelessly to improve the lives of his fellow workers in South Texas; Robert Shake's memory continues to be cherished by all those who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of Robert Stewart Shake and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Linda; to his sons, Robert and Matthew; to his daughter, Sara; to his sisters, Myrl Bishop and Jean Ann Sykes; and to the many other relatives and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert Stewart Shake.
