R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Corpus Christi lost a beloved friend, neighbor, and true American patriot with the passing of David Alaniz, Jr., on April 12, 2005, at the age of 84; and WHEREAS, A decorated veteran, Mr. Alaniz served his country with distinction during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army's 88th Division; in May 1944, he was captured by the Germans and held as a prisoner of war, including time in both Auschwitz and Dachau concentration camps; and WHEREAS, In recognition of his valiant service to this country, he was deservedly awarded three Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a POW medal; and WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Alaniz moved with his brother, I. J., from their hometown of Beeville to Corpus Christi, where he became one of the first Mexican Americans to work in a local post office, and was quickly promoted to the position of supervisor; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan lead a full and rewarding life with his devoted wife, Elvira, that was further enriched by the loving relationship they shared with their children, Linda, Carmen, David, and Robert; and WHEREAS, D. J. Alaniz earned the respect and admiration of all who were privileged to know him; a man of great character, determination, and courage, he will live on in the memories of those who loved him and in the lasting legacy of achievement that he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the life of David J. Alaniz, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Elvira; to his children, Linda A. Alaniz, Carmen Bazan and her husband, David, David Raymond Alaniz and his wife, Gail, Robert John Alaniz and his wife, Maria; to his brothers, Ray Alaniz and Eustorgio Alaniz and his wife, Julia; to his sisters, Olivia Benavides, Dora Trevino and her husband, Ben, Petrita Sanchez and her husband, Martin, and Mary Ortega; to his grandchildren, Stephanie Celene Calderon and her husband, Eddie, David Andres Bazan, Dominic Bazan and his wife, Nicole, Nicholas Anthony Bazan and his wife, Alicia, Sophie Marie Diaz, Erica Lynn Russell and her husband, Chris, Mark Douglas Ruth, Robi Alaniz, Geneva Elizarrara, Patrick Zoblisein and his wife, Tracy, and Bethany Zoblisein; to his 10 great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of David J. Alaniz, Jr.
