H.R. No. 2296
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Luis Alvarez, a student at Anthony Middle School in
Anthony, Texas, has been named a national finalist in the 2004-2005
Do the Write Thing Challenge; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the National Campaign to Stop Violence,
the Do the Write Thing program encourages seventh-grade and
eighth-grade students to examine the impact of violence on their
lives and to make a personal commitment to do something about the
problem of violence; and
WHEREAS, Students accepting the challenge use some form of
written expression, such as an essay, poem, play, or song, to
address three questions: how has violence affected that student's
life, what are the causes of violence, and what can that student do
about violence; and
WHEREAS, In El Paso County, more than 575 students from five
school districts--Canutillo, Anthony, Clint, Fabens, and San
Elizario--participated in the challenge; a total of 10 students, a
boy and a girl from each school, were selected as school finalists,
and from that round of winners a boy and a girl were chosen as
national finalists; and
WHEREAS, National finalists are honored at a recognition
ceremony in Washington, D.C., and during their visit to the
nation's capital they have an opportunity to present their views on
violence to a variety of government officials; in addition, their
writings are published in a book and placed in the Library of
Congress; and
WHEREAS, Our state needs citizens who understand the serious
issues facing their communities and who are willing to tackle
difficult social conditions, and through his thoughtful and
eloquent meditation on violence, Luis Alvarez has shown qualities
of mind and heart that signal the emergence of a wise and
public-spirited leader; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Luis Alvarez on his selection as a
national finalist in the 2004-2005 Do the Write Thing Challenge and
extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success in all his
endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Alvarez as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
