A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to establishing an annual list of concurrent enrollment courses. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Section 61.076, Education Code, is amended by adding Subsection (c) to read as follows: (c) Each year, from among courses on the lists submitted to the board as required by Section 61.052 and from among any distance learning courses approved by the board and offered in accordance with Section 61.051(j), the P-16 Council shall recommend to the board and the State Board of Education English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language courses for the board and the State Board of Education to consider for purposes of this subsection. Each year, from among the courses recommended under this subsection by the P-16 Council, the State Board of Education, in consultation with the board, shall adopt a list of concurrent enrollment courses that will satisfy both the curriculum requirements for the recommended or advanced high school program identified by the State Board of Education under Section 28.025 and the requirements for a degree offered by an institution of higher education. The State Board of Education shall distribute the list adopted under this subsection to the counselors at each middle school, junior high school, and high school in this state. For purposes of this subsection, "concurrent enrollment course" has the meaning assigned by Section 51.8041. SECTION 2. Subsection (c), Section 61.076, Education Code, as added by this Act, applies beginning with the 2006–2007 academic year and the 2006–2007 school year. SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
