A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT

relating to the requirements for the renewal of a driver's license.           
	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:                        
	SECTION 1.  Section 521.273(a), Transportation Code, is 
amended to read as follows:
	(a)  For the renewal of a driver's license, the [The] 
department:
		(1)  shall [may] require a vision test every 18 years;
and
		(2)  may require and prescribe the procedure and 
standards for other examinations [an examination for the renewal of 
a driver's license].
	SECTION 2.  Section 522.053(c), Transportation Code, is 
amended to read as follows:
	(c)  For the renewal of a commercial driver's license, the 
[The] department:
		(1)  shall [may] require [an examination, including] a 
vision test every 18 years; and
		(2)  may require other examinations[, for the renewal 
of a commercial driver's license].
	SECTION 3.  The change in law made by this Act applies only 
to a renewal that occurs on or after the effective date of this Act.  
A renewal that occurs before the effective date of this Act is 
covered by the law in effect on the date of the renewal, and the 
former law is continued in effect for that purpose.
	SECTION 4.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
