A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to providing for public safety during interactions between law enforcement officers and persons with mental impairments. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Section 1701.402, Occupations Code, is amended by adding Subsections (g) and (h) to read as follows: (g) As a requirement for an intermediate proficiency certificate, an officer must complete an education and training program established by the commission on de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques with persons with mental impairments. (h) As a requirement for an advanced or a master proficiency certificate, an officer must obtain a certification established by the commission under Section 1701.404 for officers for mental health assignments. SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005.
