SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize April as Jazz Appreciation Month and to honor Jim Cullum
as one of the outstanding advocates of jazz in Texas; and
WHEREAS, Initiated by the Smithsonian Institution's National
Museum of American History, Jazz Appreciation Month was established
to highlight the multicultural history of jazz, its important
influence on American culture, and the rich diversity of the music;
and
WHEREAS, Texas musicians have made many important
contributions to jazz throughout the years; Riverwalk Jazz, the
nationally broadcast public radio series from Jim Cullum's Landing
Jazz Club, is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as an
important educational and cultural resource; and
WHEREAS, Jazz Appreciation Month is intended to encourage
people of all ages to participate in jazz; its aim is for people
everywhere to develop programs to explore, perpetuate, and honor
jazz as a national and world treasure; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby honor the contributions of Jim Cullum to jazz music and
recognize April as Jazz Appreciation Month; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared in
recognition of the importance of jazz to the cultural heritage of
our nation and the Lone Star State.
