S.C.R. No. 40
SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Terrell County on the occasion of its Centennial; and
WHEREAS, Terrell County, carved out of a section of Pecos
County, was officially established by the Texas Legislature on July
14, 1905, and was named for Alexander Watkins Terrell, a
Confederate Army veteran and Texas senator; and
WHEREAS, Terrell County is situated in the scenic Big Bend
area of southwestern Texas, marked by deep canyons, steep hills,
the Rio Grande and the Pecos River, and abundant wildlife; and
WHEREAS, Terrell County boasts a colorful history; Judge Roy
Bean, after feuding with Charley Wilson, found the town of
Sanderson too rough to handle and moved to Langtry; and in 1912, a
train robbery at Baxter's Curve was thwarted when the thieves were
killed by the Wells Fargo agent guarding the shipment; and
WHEREAS, Terrell County is proud of its rich heritage; early
pioneers brought progress and growth to Sanderson and the
Trans-Pecos area through their vision, dedication, and
perseverance; and
WHEREAS, Terrell County flourished as a result of the
railroad and the ranches surrounding Sanderson, and it became one
of the leading centers of sheep and wool production in the country;
in the 1950s, oil and gas production joined ranching and
railroading as a major industry in the county; and
WHEREAS, Although Terrell County has endured economic
hardships, droughts, and floods, it continues to thrive today
because of the pioneering spirit that is its legacy; and
WHEREAS, Sanderson, the county seat of Terrell County and the
Cactus Capital of Texas, is hosting the Centennial Celebration on
July 1 through 4, 2005; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby commend the citizens of Terrell County for their many
contributions to our state and nation and extend to them best wishes
for a joyous Centennial Celebration; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for
Terrell County as an expression of esteem from the Texas
Legislature.
