SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 9
In Memory
of
Donald E. Grace
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Donald E. Grace, who died December 24, 2004, at the age of 74; and WHEREAS, Donald Grace was born in Livingston, and he graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston in 1948, where he received many district honors in football; he attended Prairie View A&M University on a football scholarship, where he earned All-Conference and All-American honors and served as co-captain of the 1951 Southwestern Conference Championship team; he earned a bachelor's degree in education, and in 1968, a master's degree; and WHEREAS, Mr. Grace enjoyed a successful career as a football coach at Carter G. Woodson High School and James Madison High School in Dallas, earning several state championships; he moved to Austin in 1976, where he worked as the human resources director at Huston-Tillotson College until his retirement in 1994; and WHEREAS, For his contributions to football, he was inducted into the Prairie View University Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame in 2001; the Houston Texans entered him into the "Texan Legends" program in 2004; and WHEREAS, Donald was a devout Christian who practiced his faith in his daily life, and he was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church; and WHEREAS, Donald E. Grace was a devoted father and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Donald E. Grace: his daughters and son-in-law, Andrea Grace, Glenda Grace, and Alvin Williams; his grandson, Philip Grace; his brother, Thomas Grace; his sister and brother-in-law, Velma Joyce Ritcherson and Lewis Ritcherson; and his many beloved nieces and nephews; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the family of Donald E. Grace as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Donald E. Grace.
