SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 48
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Curtistene Smith McCowan, who retired from the Federal Trade Commission, Southwest Region, after 32 years of loyal service; and WHEREAS, During her tenure with the Federal Trade Commission, Curtistene worked as a senior investigator for more than 18 years; she participated in the Dallas Area Chapter of Federally Employed Women, serving as its president on two occasions; and WHEREAS, She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Dallas Baptist University and was the first African American elected to public office in DeSoto; she served two terms on the DeSoto Independent School District's board of trustees, including twice as president, and has been a member of the school district foundation's board of directors since 2000; she has been appointed to several committees by the Texas Association of School Boards; and WHEREAS, A dedicated volunteer for many civic and religious organizations, Curtistene has served on the board of trustees of Kirkwood Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, as a volunteer coordinator for the Kirkwood Christian Academy board of directors, and has been a longtime member of the Missionary Society; and WHEREAS, Curtistene has also volunteered her time and expertise to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Maurine F. Bailey Cultural Foundation; she has remained active in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority coordinating programs and conferences for the organization; and WHEREAS, In honor of Curtistene's distinguished career with the Federal Trade Commission, a retirement celebration is being held on January 29, 2005, at the Oak Cliff Country Club in Dallas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend Curtistene Smith McCowan for her many years of public service and extend to her best wishes in the retirement years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
