SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 88
In Memory
of
Dr. Karl R. Brinker
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of Dr. Karl R. Brinker,
who died January 22, 2005, at the age of 58; and
WHEREAS, Karl R. Brinker was born on August 10, 1946, in
Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and grew up in Calgary, Alberta; he
graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan in
1968 and earned a medical degree from McGill University in Montreal
in 1972; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Brinker served as a surgeon in the military
with the United States Public Health Service Center for Disease
Control in Fort Collins, Colorado, from 1975 to 1977 and
completed a fellowship in nephrology at The University of Texas
Health Science Center in Dallas; and
WHEREAS, He was a clinical associate professor with
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for over 20
years, and he held numerous positions with the Methodist Dallas
Medical System; Dr. Brinker was also a medical staff physician
and director of dialysis with Dallas Nephrology Associates; and
WHEREAS, A highly valued and respected nephrologist,
Dr. Brinker was renowned in the medical community for his
experience and expertise in organ transplants; he helped develop
guidelines for organ donor requirements and was a founding member
of the Texas Transplant Society; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Brinker accomplished a great deal during his
lifetime, and his loss at such an early age is a tragedy for his
family, his colleagues, and the medical profession; he will long
be remembered for his visionary leadership and service in the
field of nephrology and organ transplantation; and
WHEREAS, An empathetic caregiver whose serious nature was
leavened with a warm sense of humor, Karl Brinker enjoyed dry
fly-fishing in Montana, watching hockey games, and coaching
youth baseball; he was a devoted husband and father, and he
leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby honor and commemorate the life of
Dr. Karl R. Brinker and extend sincere condolences to his
bereaved family: his wife, Mary Lyne Morris Brinker; his son,
Andrew Oberlin Brinker; his daughter, Stephanie Kaye Brinker;
and his sister, Linda Kaye Crawford; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
in memory of Dr. Karl R. Brinker.
