SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 111
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the members of the Marshall High School Mavericks
football team, whose hard-fought 2004 season culminated in their
appearance in the University Interscholastic League Class 4A
Division I state championship game; and
WHEREAS, The Mavericks eliminated Houston Yates in the
quarterfinal game to become Region III champions; advancing to
the state tournament, the Marshall Mavericks faced Boerne, the
Region IV champions, in the semifinal game; and
WHEREAS, The Mavericks' strong victory in the semifinals
by a score of 21-3 qualified the team for a spot in the state
championship game, an impressive achievement that will long be
remembered in the town of Marshall; although that game ended in a
close 23-21 loss to Ennis, the Mavericks can take pride in their
accomplishments and in having advanced through the playoffs to
the state championship finals; and
WHEREAS, With the support of the entire community and the
guidance of coach Rodney Southern and his staff, the Mavericks
have played well throughout the season; their hard work,
discipline, and commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship have
brought honor to their school and their community; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Marshall High School
Mavericks on advancing to the Class 4A Division I state
championship game and on their exemplary performance as a team
this season; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
