SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 122
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Texas Association of Second Harvest Food Banks
on the occasion of Food Banks of Texas Day at the Capitol,
February 16, 2005; and
WHEREAS, The Texas Association of Second Harvest Food Banks,
which was founded in 1986, is composed of 18 food banks that serve
all 254 Texas counties; the member food banks are all America's
Second Harvest affiliates and adhere to national standards for
food distribution; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, the association's member food banks
provided more than one million meals to Texans in need; and
WHEREAS, The association has formed a partnership with the
Texas Department of Criminal Justice to distribute to the needy
surplus fresh produce grown on prison land; this partnership
enables offenders to gain work experience and certifications
while providing valuable help to food banks; and
WHEREAS, The association has been awarded a grant from the
Texas Department of Agriculture that enables Texas growers to donate
surplus product to help feed the hungry; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend the Texas Association of
Second Harvest Food Banks for its outstanding humanitarian work
as we observe Food Banks of Texas Day; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the Texas Association of Second Harvest Food Banks as an
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
