SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 124
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is honored to recognize the Santa Maria Cemetery of Pflugerville on the occasion of its dedication as a Historic Texas Cemetery by the Texas Historical Commission on February 12, 2005; and WHEREAS, The Santa Maria Cemetery was established by Hispanic families who fled the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century; the cemetery was first named San Camilo to honor Camilo Mercado, the first person buried there; the cemetery was renamed in 1965 when a chapel was built to honor Santa Maria; and WHEREAS, The settlers who established the cemetery did not return to Mexico as they had originally planned; many of the descendants of the original organizers of the cemetery live in the Pflugerville area today; and WHEREAS, These descendants have helped build Pflugerville from a small settlement into the thriving urban center it is today; they have worked hard for the improvement of their entire community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Hispanic community of Pflugerville and the descendants of the original settlers on the dedication of the Santa Maria Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them in honor of this event.
