SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 156
WHEREAS, Citizens from Nacogdoches County, members of the Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce, and the Leadership Nacogdoches Class of 2005 are celebrating Nacogdoches County Days at the State Capitol on February 16 and 17, 2005; and WHEREAS, Possessing a rich and varied history, Nacogdoches County is one of the original counties of the Republic of Texas; the region was occupied by Caddo Indians and Spanish missionaries before the arrival of Anglo-Americans in the 1820s; and WHEREAS, The county seat, Nacogdoches, is the oldest city in Texas and received its official designation from the Mexican government in 1779; it was home to the state's first newspaper, Gaceta de Tejas, and today it maintains several historic landmarks, including the Old Stone Fort, which figured prominently in the quest for Texas independence; and WHEREAS, Located in the Piney Woods of East Texas, the area boasts a fertile forestland, which has provided residents with prosperous agribusiness, and thriving timber, poultry, and dairy production; and WHEREAS, With its natural beauty and charm, Nacogdoches County also lends itself to ample recreational activities and outdoor events; the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Angelina National Forest are both popular sites for camping, hiking, and fishing, and the Blueberry Festival in June is a notable event that celebrates the county's thriving blueberry industry; and WHEREAS, Higher education is an important part of daily life for many residents of Nacogdoches as it is the home of the respected Stephen F. Austin State University, which supports the local economy and infuses the city with a youthful energy and spirit; and WHEREAS, This unique and vibrant Texas county has played an indelible role in the history of Texas, and it is appropriate to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the residents of Nacogdoches County for their preservation of their region's important past and their myriad contributions to the Lone Star State today; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby recognize February 16 and 17, 2005, as Nacogdoches County Days at the State Capitol and extend to the delegation here today sincere best wishes for an enjoyable visit.
