SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 177
In Memory
of
George M. Shuffer, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins
the citizens of El Paso in mourning the loss of
Brigadier General George M. Shuffer, Jr., who died
February 5, 2005, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, General Shuffer was born September 27, 1923,
in Palestine, Texas; he had lived in El Paso since 1974; and
WHEREAS, General Shuffer was a much-decorated soldier
who served his country in three wars over the course of an
outstanding 35-year career in the Army; and
WHEREAS, General Shuffer served in the 93rd Infantry
Division during World War II and in the 25th Infantry Division
during the Korean War, and he commanded a battalion in the
1st Infantry Division in Vietnam; he was awarded the
Distinguished Service Medal, the Purple Heart, three Silver
Stars, four Bronze Stars, and five Air Medals, and he received
the Legion of Merit four times; and
WHEREAS, General Shuffer later served in the Pentagon on
the Army General Staff and in the Office of the Secretary of
Defense; and
WHEREAS, General Shuffer was a trailblazer during the
period of the racial integration of the Army, helping to break
down racial barriers; he was inducted into the Infantry Hall of
Fame in 1984; and
WHEREAS, After moving to El Paso, General Shuffer retired
from the Army in 1975; he attended Saint Charles Seminary and
was ordained a deacon, and he served as a chaplain at the
William Beaumont Army Medical Center for almost 30 years; and
WHEREAS, George Shuffer was a man of strength and
compassion, and his life of service to this country and its
veterans is a testament to his courage and his dedication to
his fellow man; and
WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, George Shuffer
leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Brigadier General George M. Shuffer, Jr.:
his wife, Cecilia, and his 11 children; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the family of George Shuffer as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
it do so in memory of Brigadier General George M. Shuffer, Jr.
