SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 178
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay tribute to Ted Bender of El Paso on the grand occasion of his 80th birthday on March 24; and WHEREAS, Ted moved to El Paso in 1949 with his wife, Majanah, and began working at radio station KTSM; when the station began television broadcasting in 1953, he became the station's first weatherman and continued to forecast the weather until his retirement in 1990; and WHEREAS, Ted Bender was master of ceremonies for the annual Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association's Labor Day Telethon for many years, and he hosted the talk show "Open Mike" and also "Dialing for Dollars," and "Today's Spotlight"; and WHEREAS, He served on the El Paso City Council from 1957 to 1963 and voted for an ordinance in 1962 that ended racial segregation in public places in El Paso; he was honored for his activism and work for equality by the Martin Luther King, Jr., Committee of El Paso; and WHEREAS, Active in many civic endeavors, Ted is a member of the Downtown Lions Club and the Safety Patrol Program; he also helped bring the Kress Collection to the El Paso Museum of Art; and WHEREAS, Ted is known for living life to the fullest and enjoys traveling by car with his wife and playing poker whenever he can, and it is fitting that the Texas Senate honor him on this special day; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby recognize Ted Bender as a treasured citizen of the State of Texas and extend to him best wishes for a memorable 80th birthday celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
