SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 208
In Memory
of
Mary Garza Guerra
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Mary Garza Guerra, who
died November 7, 2004, at the age of 84; and
WHEREAS, Mary was born on September 23, 1920, in Corpus Christi
to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Garza, Sr.; her father was the founder of the
League of United Latin American Citizens, and like her father,
Mary remained active in that organization and in community
affairs throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, In the 1930s, she worked for the Nueces County
tax office at a time when most women did not work; she was married
to the late John C. Guerra, who shared her dedication to community
service; she was preceded in death by her loving brother,
Robert Garza; and
WHEREAS, Mary was well known for reaching out to people who
had few opportunities, and she was devoted to her family, her
church, and her work with the League of United Latin American
Citizens; and
WHEREAS, Recognized as a young woman for her stunning
beauty, Mary was adored throughout her life, and she enriched the
lives of all who knew her with her love and compassion, her warmth
and kindness, and her wonderful sense of humor; and
WHEREAS, She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she
leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her
family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Mary Garza Guerra: her daughter, C. A. Serrano; her
sons, John Charles Guerra and Robert "Tony" Guerra; her brothers,
Ben Garza, Jr., and Joe Garza; her sister, Lydia Delgado; and her
eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Mary Guerra.
