SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 212
WHEREAS, Through their tireless endeavors over many decades, Bob and Doris Bowman of Lufkin have rendered exceptional service to the citizens of East Texas; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bowman has been studying the region, its culture, and development since at least 1955, when he began reporting for the Tyler Courier-Times-Telegraph; after working in journalism and corporate public relations, he opened his own public relations firm, with a special focus on East Texas, some 20 years ago; and WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, this esteemed gentleman has embraced an extraordinary number of opportunities to serve his community; the longtime secretary-treasurer of the Pineywoods Economic Partnership, Mr. Bowman has also helped to lead the Pineywoods Foundation and Deep East Texas Foundation, the Memorial Medical System of East Texas, the Angelina and Neches River Authority, and the Red River Public Radio Network, as well as the Lufkin/Angelina County and East Texas Chambers of Commerce and Angelina College; in addition, he spent 15 years on the Lufkin City Council; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bowman's deep dedication to the region is further evidenced by his founding of the Best of East Texas Publishers, which has produced a host of books on the area; moreover, he is a popular speaker and a prolific, award-winning author, with more than 30 titles on Texas history and folklore to his credit; and WHEREAS, Presently a member of the Texas Historical Commission and past chair of the Angelina County Historical Commission, Mr. Bowman has played an active role in the East Texas Historical Association, Texas State Historical Association, and Alamo Defenders Descendants Association; he has further served as a founding director of the Texas Forestry Museum and the Museum of East Texas; and WHEREAS, Doris Bowman, a partner in the couple's two business ventures, earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University; formerly a journalism instructor at The University of Texas at Tyler and a public relations officer for that institution and the Lufkin Independent School District, she has co-authored several books on East Texas subjects; along with giving staunch support to the Pineywoods Economic Partnership, she has played a vital role in the East Texas Historical Association and chaired the board of directors of the Texas Council for the Humanities; and WHEREAS, Unswerving in their desire to promote the common good while preserving the rich heritage of their region, Bob and Doris Bowman have given bountifully of their time, talents, and expertise, and their efforts have earned them the affection and high regard of countless fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby honor Bob and Doris Bowman for their exemplary service to the people of East Texas and extend to them profound appreciation for a lifetime of good works; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Bowman as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
