SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 245
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
welcome the citizens of Kilgore to Austin and to recognize
March 1, 2005, as Kilgore Day at the Capitol; and
WHEREAS, Established in the early 1870s by the
International and Great Northern Railway, Kilgore was named for
Colonel Constantine Buckley Kilgore, who provided 15 acres for
the railroad's right-of-way; Colonel Kilgore later served as a
state senator, a congressman, and a federal judge; and
WHEREAS, Kilgore remained a sleepy town devoted mostly to
agriculture and lumber production for over 50 years; in 1930, an
experienced wildcatter, Dad Joiner, came to the area and drilled
the C. M. Joiner No. 3 Daisy Bradford well, ushering in the
East Texas oil boom; and
WHEREAS, In a matter of days, Kilgore's population more
than tripled, and downtown Kilgore soon had the greatest
concentration of oil wells in the world, which came to be known
as the "World's Richest Acre"; and
WHEREAS, Kilgore, surrounded by lush pine forests, is a
city with a diversified economy revolving around petroleum,
high-tech manufacturing, tourism, and other business
enterprises; and
WHEREAS, Kilgore's other attractions include the
East Texas Oil Museum, the World's Richest Acre Park, and
Kilgore College, home of the renowned Kilgore Rangerettes; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Kilgore confidently face the
challenges of the future while embracing their rich history; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Kilgore for
their many contributions to our state and extend to them best
wishes for a celebratory Kilgore Day at the Capitol; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for the citizens of Kilgore as a token of esteem from the
Texas Senate.
