SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 281
In Memory
of
Charles Leo Korbell
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Charles Leo Korbell, who
passed away January 23, 2005, at the age of 93; and
WHEREAS, Born on December 16, 1911, to Albert B. Korbell
and Josephine Thomas Korbell, Charles grew up in Floresville;
he excelled in athletics as quarterback and captain of the
Floresville High School football team and became known as the
"Jim Thorpe of Floresville" for his track and field exploits; he
married Emma Raska, also of Floresville, in 1939; and
WHEREAS, Hunting was one of the mainstays of his long and
full life; while Charles began hunting as a young man during
the Depression as a way to help feed his family, it became his
passion, a means to commune with nature and a priceless way to
spend time with his family; and
WHEREAS, Charles also spent many hours in his garden,
tending his roses and trees and patiently nurturing small
cuttings for decades as they grew into large, majestic trees;
and
WHEREAS, He retired from the Texas Highway Department in
1977 after 42 years of service to the State of Texas and further
added to his long and useful career with 13 years at Vulcan
Materials; and
WHEREAS, His strength of character and sense of humor were
readily apparent to all who knew him, and Charles Korbell leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by those whose
lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Charles Leo Korbell: his wife of 65 years,
Emma Raska Korbell; his sons and daughters-in-law,
John and Bonnie Korbell and Charles and Cheryl Korbell; his
daughter, Sharon Kidd, and her husband, Mike Kidd; his eleven
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and his many other
beloved relatives and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for the family of Charles Korbell as an expression of deepest
sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns
this day, it do so in memory of Charles Leo Korbell.
