SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 308

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 
recognize Dr. Alfred N. Poindexter for 59 years of exemplary 
service to Prairie View A&M University; and
	WHEREAS, During his tenure at Prairie View A&M University 
as a professor of veterinary medicine, this dedicated and caring 
educator has instilled in his students a lifelong love of 
learning; and
	WHEREAS, Dr. Poindexter has made an enduring contribution 
to this state and this country; he served as a reserve captain in 
the United States Air Force Veterinary Corps and as the first 
African American chairman of the board of a local bank in Waller 
County; before retirement, he was the oldest practicing African 
American veterinarian in the United States; and
	WHEREAS, Dr. Poindexter's legacy also includes such honors 
as the prestigious Gold Card Membership from the American 
Veterinarian Medical Association, a citation from the Texas 
Commissioner of Agriculture as one of the Outstanding Black 
Agriculturalists in the state, and induction into the Texas 
Heritage Hall of Honor; and
	WHEREAS, To pay tribute to this prestigious professor,
a living legend at Prairie View A&M University, the university
is hosting a Scholarship Retirement Gala in his honor on
March 19, 2005; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Alfred N. Poindexter for 59 
years of meritorious service to Prairie View A&M University; and, 
be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
