SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 317
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Jarvis Christian College on the occasion of its Founder's/Homecoming Week, which is being celebrated March 16 through 20, 2005; and WHEREAS, Jarvis Christian College is a traditional liberal arts institution offering a high-quality education in an environment that provides personalized education for its students; it is located in Wood County, midway between Dallas and Shreveport, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, Jarvis Christian College began in 1904 when Mary Alphin, a state organizer for the Negro Disciples of Christ in Texas, envisioned a school for black youth that would include religious and industrial training; the college, originally called Jarvis Christian Institute, is named for Major and Mrs. J. J. Jarvis, who donated the land for the college; and WHEREAS, In addition to offering a challenging academic program and athletic and social activities, the college provides ongoing opportunities for its students to experience spiritual growth; it has an outstanding honors program and an excellent faculty, and it was listed by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best regional liberal arts colleges in the Southwest; and WHEREAS, Under the outstanding leadership of its president, Dr. Sebetha Jenkins, and its governing board, the college has continued to prepare students for the challenges of living in a global and technological society; and WHEREAS, Jarvis Christian College has earned its national reputation for academic excellence and it has invigorated the economy and enriched the cultural offerings of Wood County; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend Jarvis Christian College for its valuable contributions to the educational system of this state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable Founder's/Homecoming Week; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Jarvis Christian College as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
