SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 347
In Memory
of
Willie Myers
WHEREAS, Friends and family mourned the passing of former Palestine city councilman Willie Myers, who died on January 30, 2005, at the age of 92; and WHEREAS, The youngest of 12 children, Mr. Myers attended Douglass School and Lincoln High School before working as a cook for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and later as a chef for the Sadler Motel; and WHEREAS, This respected community leader served on the Palestine City Council for 12 years beginning in 1977; he was honored by the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce as the Citizen of the Year in 1989; the city also named a park on Dorrance Street in his honor and the Palestine Negro Business and Professional Women's Club honored him on two occasions for fraternalism and citizenship; and WHEREAS, An active member of South Union Baptist Church for more than half a century, Mr. Myers was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, a worshipful master of the Masonic Dean Lodge Number 90, and treasurer of the Masonic Lodge, W.R. Consistory; he also distinguished himself as chair of the Anderson County Defense Fund, and served on the boards of the Anderson County Voters Committee, the local Red Cross chapter, Meals on Wheels, United Way, and the Anderson County Community Council; and WHEREAS, Willie Myers truly made a positive difference in his community; although he will be greatly missed, the legacy of strength, integrity, and humility that he leaves behind will continue to inspire others for years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Willie Myers and extend deepest sympathy to his family: his daughter, Freta Parkes and her husband, Charles; his grandsons, Craig Parkes, Keith Parkes, and Charles Parkes III; his eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; his great-nephew, Allen "Randy" Smith; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Willie Myers.
