SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 349
In Memory
of
Dr. Clifford Lee
WHEREAS, Family, friends, and colleagues mourn the sudden
passing of Dr. Clifford Lee of Jacksonville on December 2, 2004,
at the age of 56; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lee was president of Lon Morris College, the
oldest two-year college in Texas, where he was nominated to serve
as president by the school's board of trustees in 1994; and
WHEREAS, Born in Liberty, Dr. Lee graduated from Lon Morris
and Stephen F. Austin State University, and he earned his
master's degree in theology from Southern Methodist University
and his doctoral degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in
Chicago; he was a United Methodist minister and served churches
in Laneville, Kilgore, Mount Pleasant, Texarkana, Longview, and
Jasper for 25 years before becoming president of the Jacksonville
liberal arts college; and
WHEREAS, A much-admired leader, Dr. Lee contributed
immeasurably to the recent positive changes taking place at
Lon Morris, and during his presidency, he oversaw an expanding
enrollment and numerous construction projects, including a new
welcome center, the Arthur and Evie Jo Wilson Administration
Building, the expansion of the college library, and the opening
of the Floyd Addington Fitness Center; moreover, he secured a
$1 million commitment to build a new student center; and
WHEREAS, An active member of his community, he worked in
behalf of countless civic organizations, including the
Jacksonville Economic Development Corporation, Trinity Mother
Frances Hospital, and a number of area chambers of commerce and
United Way branches; he shared his expertise with numerous
professional associations, such as the boards of the Independent
Colleges and Universities of Texas and the National Association
of Private Two-Year Colleges; he also received many honors,
including the Howard Grimes Award for Excellence in Christian
Education and the 1993 Citizen of the Year Award from the
Jasper Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, A loving father, husband, and friend, Clifford Lee
will be deeply missed but his tireless devotion to the Lon Morris
community and the legacy of accomplishments that he leaves behind
will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby pay special tribute to Dr. Clifford Lee
and extend deepest sympathy to his family: his wife of 34 years,
Nancy; to his daughter, Carrie Lee; his son and daughter-in-law,
Craig and Terra Lee; his mother, Sarah Lee; his sister,
Marilyn Robinson; his brother, Mike Lee; and to the other
relatives and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
this day, it do so in memory of Clifford Lee.
