SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 350
	WHEREAS, Dr. Lucy Mathis and Dr. Lee Roy Mathis, Jr., have 
been named Patriots of the Year, the highest honor bestowed by 
The University of Texas at Tyler, for contributions that have 
significantly furthered the mission of that institution; and
	WHEREAS, In 1995, Dr. Lee Roy Mathis led a successful 
community effort to secure a campus of The University of Texas 
at Tyler for Palestine; four years later, as president of Memorial
Hospital Foundation--Palestine, Incorporated, he presented a 
check for $1.2 million to The University of Texas at Tyler to 
create the Memorial Hospital Foundation endowment, which supports
scholarships for area students at the Palestine campus; and
	WHEREAS, Over the years, the Mathises have personally made 
several generous contributions to specific and discretionary 
funds of the university; moreover, they continue to be active 
supporters of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at all 
three campuses of The University of Texas at Tyler, underwriting 
such events as Nursing Jubilee and seminars for graduate students;
and
	WHEREAS, The Mathises both support the President's 
Associates, the Don R. Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, 
and The Patriot Classic, a week-long series of events that raise 
money for student scholarships; in addition, both are charter 
members of The Heritage Society, an organization of individuals 
who have named the university as a beneficiary in their will or 
estate plan; and
	WHEREAS, Now retired, Drs. Lucy and Lee Roy Mathis practiced
medicine in Palestine from 1960 to 1995 and 1998, respectively; 
during their distinguished careers, they each served as chief of 
staff at Memorial Hospital in Palestine and held the presidency 
of the Anderson-Leon County Medical Society; and
	WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Tyler has benefited 
immeasurably from the extraordinary support it has received from 
this esteemed couple, and their philanthropy will enrich the lives
of countless Texans for years to come; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 
79th Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Lucy Mathis and 
Dr. Lee Roy Mathis, Jr., on their selection as Patriots of the 
Year by The University of Texas at Tyler and extend to them 
profound appreciation for their lifetime of good works; and, 
be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 
prepared for Dr. Lucy Mathis and Dr. Lee Roy Mathis as an 
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
