SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 386
In Memory
of
Ted Powers
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Ted Powers, who died
February 22, 2005, at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, Ted Powers was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on
May 3, 1921; he served in the United States Marine Corps during
World War II and was a member of the Third Division that landed on
the shores of Iwo Jima 60 years ago; and
WHEREAS, He began his newspaper career as a copy boy, working
after school and on weekends for the Kansas City Star; after
graduating from high school, he began working with the Associated
Press as a wire photo technician and then became a photojournalist;
he would go on to work for the Associated Press for 48 years,
which included 17 years in Austin's Capitol Press Bureau; and
WHEREAS, He was a member of the Headliners Club of Austin
from its early days and served as its president from 1969 to 1971;
in 1986, the club gave Ted its first Distinguished Achievement
Award for the Working Press for his exceptional body of work; and
WHEREAS, A gifted and talented photographer, Ted was
admired and respected by his colleagues; he photographed every
president from Harry Truman to Ronald Reagan, as well as subjects
of important news events in Texas; he was renowned for his people
skills and his kindness toward others; and
WHEREAS, Ted Powers was a devoted husband to his late wife,
Kay, and was a devoted father and grandfather, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Ted Powers: his sons and daughters-in-law,
David and Marge Baylor, Denny and Dani Baylor, and Randy and
Debbie Baylor; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Dan Woolley;
and his 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
Ted Powers.
