SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 397
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Anita Spivey for her exceptional achievements and her many contributions to the Houston community; and WHEREAS, Dr. Spivey is a 1957 graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School; she attended Texas Southern University, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in 1970 and a master of science degree in 1971; and WHEREAS, Heeding the call to the ministry, she began her theological studies in 1987 and received her doctoral degree from the Gospel Ministry Outreach Institute; she is currently a minister at the Saint Philip Missionary Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, A teacher in the Houston Independent School District for over 25 years, she served as vice president, secretary, and treasurer of the Houston Teachers Association and as area vice president of the Houston Federation of Teachers; and WHEREAS, As a volunteer at SHAPE Community Center, a five-term Parent-Teacher Association president, a foster parent for five years, and a cohost on the KCOH radio show "Senior Issues," Dr. Spivey has had a positive impact on the lives of many in her community; and WHEREAS, Dr. Spivey is well deserving of the recognition she will receive from her loving family and many friends at a ceremony being held in her honor at Saint Philip Missionary Baptist Church on March 18, 2005; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Anita Spivey for her many accomplishments and her years of hard work on behalf of her community; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
